Nervous

“Jazz,” Alice called from the top of the stairs, a look of concealed worry on her face. “Can you come up here, please? We need to talk.”

Those words never preceded a good conversation.

Nodding, I downed the last of my beer quickly.

Alice was the epitome of energy all the time; it was one of the many reasons that I’d fallen in love with her in the first place so, seeing her looking so serious, almost fearful, made a knot form in my stomach.

My palms were sweating profusely as I ascended the stairs, preparing myself for the worst.

Glancing to my right, I can’t help but smile at the way his lips are parted as he snores lightly.  He’s exhausted from the ordeal of the week spent visiting my family.

I am, too.

Turbulence causes a woman behind us to gasp, but he sleeps on.

That’s Jasper.

Always a rock, always my center of calm.

That’s why I needed him with me on this all-important trip.  He couldn’t understand how a man could have reached thirty-one without telling his parents he’s gay, but the answer to me was simple… obvious.

There was no reason good enough until him.

Erica, I know you told me that I’d better not be writing anything for you since you never finished my birthday fic but did you really expect me to listen? I sure as heck hope not. In fact, I’ve been stressing myself out since June trying to write something for your birthday. There have been a lot of failed attempts that Nae knows all about. Plus, you couldn’t seem to make up your mind on whether you wanted JasPeter or Jalice. So, I wrote both. I love you, ficwife bffl and I wish I could be there with you to celebrate your birthday instead of stuck here in Hawai’i. Hope it’s memorable anyway!

Distance

I watched him from across the room, my eyes taking in his lithe and lanky frame appreciatively. It wasn’t often that my brother could successfully convince me to get out of the house and party with him, but for once, I was thankful that he’d pushed me tonight.

The entire night, my eyes had been on the man that had walked through the door barely fifteen minutes after we had.

He was devastatingly gorgeous, and a very specific, persistent part of my anatomy had certainly taken notice.

Shifting to hide my rather overt and protruding reaction to him, I grimaced.

“Oh for fuck's sake,” I scream as I pace my room. This shit has been going on way too long now, and I can't get a straight answer. How hard is it to transfer a phone line and Internet access to a new place. Extremely, it seems, because first they lose my number in some sort of red tape and I have to wait two weeks to get it back, and have a temporary number on top of that to keep me going.

When they finally fix that, my internet connection gets lost in a sea of, 'I don't know what happened', and 'it should be working just fine'. Until finally I get some grumpy old bastard who sounds bored with the entire situation and really doesn't want to be bothered with it.

Late

I glance at my watch, cursing under my breath when I see the time. I was supposed to meet him half an hour ago, but a flat tire this morning derailed my entire day. To top things off, I can't get hold of him - no signal at the beach.

"Everything perfectly planned, and it still goes to shit..."

Patting my pocket, I sigh in relief as my fingers trace the outline of the small box.

The last thing I need is for that to be missing right now.

Clutching my camera tighter, I walk faster, closing the distance between us.
